The work of preserving the maritime heritage of the Gironde cannot be done by a handful of enthusiasts alone. Whether your contribution is practical, financial, or institutional — we will find the right role for you.
The work of preserving the maritime heritage of the Gironde cannot be done by a handful of enthusiasts alone — it requires the sustained engagement of the wider community. Whether you have practical skills to offer, a family connection to the estuary's working past, a desire to support heritage education, or simply a willingness to show up on a Saturday morning and help, there is a meaningful place for you in the Section de Pessac.
We are a welcoming association with no prerequisites for membership other than genuine interest, and we have never yet failed to find the right role for someone who wanted to contribute. Experienced boatbuilders are always needed — but so are people who can drive an elderly interviewee to a recording session, help set up chairs for a winter lecture, or photograph a restoration in progress for our archive. The river does not ask for credentials; neither do we.
Our members come from every walk of life: there are retired engineers and active teachers, teenagers who came on a school visit and stayed, and grandparents who remember their own families working the estuary. What unites them is the conviction that this heritage matters and that their own effort, however modest, contributes to keeping it alive.
The river does not ask for credentials; neither do we. There is always a role — however large or small — for someone who genuinely wants to help.
Section de Pessac, on membershipEvery form of engagement is valuable and every contribution, however it arrives, goes directly toward the work of preserving a heritage that belongs to all of us.
Join us in the atelier, on oral-history recording visits, in classrooms, or at our annual estuary day — there are roles for every level of skill and availability. Experienced boatbuilders are always needed, but so are people who can drive an elderly interviewee to a recording session or help set up chairs for a winter lecture. Contact us to arrange an introductory visit: come to a Saturday-morning session, meet the team, and see the work in progress before committing to anything.
Individual donations and membership subscriptions are the lifeblood of our restoration and archiving work. A one-off contribution or a regular standing order helps us buy the oak, copper fastenings, and linseed oil that keep our hulls sound, and funds the transcription work that makes our oral history collection accessible to all. As an association loi 1901, we are a recognised organisation of public interest: donations from French taxpayers may be eligible for a tax deduction of 66% of the gifted amount, up to 20% of taxable income. Please contact us for details.
We welcome partnerships with schools, local businesses, cultural institutions, and other associations who share our commitment to the heritage of the Gironde. Whether through sponsoring a restoration project, co-producing an educational resource, or hosting one of our lectures or exhibitions, partnership with the Section de Pessac is a meaningful way for an organisation to connect with the region's history and community. We are happy to discuss the nature of any partnership and to tailor our collaboration to the interests and resources of our partners.
